Tips and tricks

Installing roof shingles is a challenging and strenuous task which is best left to professional roofers to ensure your safety. Here are some tips and tricks that will help you choose a licensed contractor wisely.

  1. Customer feedback

Reputation is a key element to consider when looking for a roofing contractor. A good way to get a clear picture of a roofer’s reputation is to read online reviews or testimonials. Keep in mind that there’s no such thing as perfection and that you might run into one or two bad reviews. Just keep an open mind and rely on your common sense.

  2. The importance of getting multiple estimates

After you have done some research into the companies you want to get quotes from, you will be left with a list of qualified prospects. Narrow down your list and target the ones that speak to you best and call them to get an estimate. This will increase your chance of finding a contractor that will get the roofing job done right at a reasonable price.

  3. Cheaper isn’t always better!

Although it is understandable to want to get the best possible price, it is always better to request at least three different estimates from well-established companies to compare if you get the most bang for your buck.

  4. Consult with the authority

You can never be too careful when entrusting your roofing project to a contractor. Ask the Better Business Bureau for any possible complaints to the contractor’s name and their resolutions.

  5. Ask for a timetable

Don’t hesitate to ask your contractor for the start date and estimated end date of the project. You are also entitled to ask how they will protect your property throughout the project’s demolition and reconstruction phases.

  6. Look out for possible subcontracting

It is not uncommon to see some contracting companies call upon sub-contractors or "in-house" crews to do the work. However, you should be made aware of this before the project starts. Ask for the workers’ qualifications and training and see if they meet the requirements and expectations you initially had.

  7. WSBC and Liability Insurance

Everyone is at risk of having a work-related accident hence the importance of choosing a contractor and workers that are adequately covered with liability insurance and that have an updated and active Workers SAFE BC Account. As a homeowner, you are entitled to ask for a copy of the company’s certificate of insurance. If need be, you can go as far as requiring a WSBC Clearance on the company.

  8. Don’t settle for an educated guess

Professional advice will get you far. Being an educated customer means being proud of having made the right decision you can stand by. An educated guess will not put you in the same situation. Research is crucial but it might get overwhelming at times.

When you call Green Tech Roofing, you will deal with roofing experts who will gladly share their knowledge and experience, providing you with one less thing to worry about!

  9. Safety

For safety purposes, it is mandatory for all contractors to adhere to and follow the WorkSafeBC and regulations throughout the completion of their work. Having a health and safety manual for all employees is also considered good practice. For added peace of mind, ask your contractor to see the manual.
